What's the Truth?

It's all relative. To your perspective, viewpoint, situation, understanding, maturity, experience, etc., etc. The truth, that is. You can say what you believe is the truth and not be lying at all and still be not telling the truth. At least the whole truth.

None of us can know everything there is to know, and so our best judgement is limited by the limits of our knowledge and understanding. So what we judge to be the truth of any matter is a limited truth. Simple, right? But I'm just now getting this. And I'm almost 60. But maybe you can relate.

Truth. To paraphrase Nietzsche, what is it, and what are you going to do when you find it...lay down on it and die? I've loved that bit of his witticism since college and believed in its wisdom. I still do, except that I still keep hoping to learn the truth of some matters, like which politician is telling the truth or even understanding what the right thing to do is.

I got thinking about this after hearing some comments by media talking heads about what journalists are expected to do. Turns out, the consensus from these media folks is that journalism is just reporting, and the reporter can't be expected to know where his or her piece fits into the bigger picture. I guess I always assumed there was at least someone in charge at news organizations who had aspired to professional journalism, studied it, got in at an organization he or she believed supported journalism, and rose from the ranks of reporting and copy editing to making sure that what was actually published was appropriate, factual, proportional, press worthy, etc. And that the topic was covered until the whole story was in. You know, journalistic. I guess nowadays there is no one like that between us and the reporters.

I'm thinking of starting a web site on which a single issue at a time can be addressed by all perspectives until it's solved. Maybe it could be programmed to pull in links to all related news stories and then randomly select subscribers fitting a myriad of profiles to invite their perspective, letting the rest rate and comment until the majority vote that we've accomplished a comprehensive understanding of the issue. Something like that, maybe.

Oh, the hell with it. What would we do if we did find the truth of any matter? Lie down on it and die?
